July 1, 2001

Let me preface this by saying that on this day, June 29, 2001, I had no idea whatsoever that the following story would happen. If you had told me that in two days, events would occur that would change my life and my world forever, I would have laughed. In your face. It just goes to show that we cannot predict the future. That is a good thing...

To Dr Pop...

It almost didn’t happen… You called right in the middle of Sex and the City and you called when you said you would call. Therefore, my only conclusion was that I needed to play it cool. But then you called again. You left a second message telling me about some great deals to Cancun. You told me later that the second call was my last chance. I returned your call that Sunday evening while on my way home from my girlfriend’s condo. We talked for a minute or two and then you asked me if I’d had dinner yet. It’s kind of funny that the answer was no, since it was 9PM on a Sunday night. You asked for directions and headed on down to my little garage apartment in central Austin.

When you got to my apartment, you climbed the stairs and knocked on the door. I’d already called my friends to tell them that you and I had a date, changed clothes, freshened up my hair and make-up, and had been peering out my window for a good 10 minutes, waiting for you to show up. I had butterflies in my stomach.

And then you were there. At my door. You had a brace on your wrist and you apologized about your car (you were driving a rental “Slaab” since yours was being repaired). We headed toward downtown and food. Because of the late hour, you got on the phone to find out which restaurants were still serving. We ended up at Truluck’s. We ate good food, drank good wine, got lost in conversation, and closed the place down. And you kissed me. And the kiss curled my toes.

Since neither of us had anywhere to be on Monday, we decided to continue our evening next door at Cedar Street. We continued talking, had some drinks, and kissed a lot. In public. We didn’t care. Later, we headed to Swig. We talked about going to Mexico. We actually talked about going to Mexico that night… So, in true spur-of-the-moment fashion, we headed back to my apartment and my computer to check prices (we may or may not have paused for some more kissing along the way). My computer decided to not connect to the internet, so I threw a bikini, flip flops, makeup, and some shorts and t-shirts into a tote bag and we headed back to your house to see what we could find on yours.

While that first date did not culminate in much more than passing out together with big plans for a trip in our minds, it was the start of a much longer, much more adventurous journey together… A journey that is ongoing and has lasted for 6 years so far. Those first days have blended together into a montage of memories that are the foundation of our lives together. The journey has been a lot of fun, scary, exciting, difficult at times, and immensely rewarding so far.

So while we may celebrate the anniversary of our wedding on March 1st each year, this day, July 1st, is the real anniversary in my mind. From that day on, we have been together.

I love you, Dr Pop!
